Raven Language · Alpha
EdgardRL is a language-learning web app with lessons, quizzes, and progress tracking per profile and course. Courses download on demand. Study under Edgard — a strict, cultured mentor inspired by Poe’s raven — not a cheerful mascot.
“Under the tutelage of a sharp intellect and inflexible discipline, EdgardRL transforms the chaos of languages into an exact structure.”
Free forever · Open source · Official site: edgardrl.com
Collaborate
EdgardRL democratizes language study through co-creation. Learn from courses already in the catalog, build new ones with the Course Creator, or contribute to the open repository — every path strengthens the community.

Use the built-in Course Creator to author lessons, quizzes, and stories. Share JSON so others can learn from your work (CC BY-NC-ND).
The app is open source (Apache 2.0). Report issues, improve docs, submit code, or help shape the platform everyone uses.
Free forever. We are building a collaborative ecosystem — not a closed product — where knowledge travels freely inside the platform.
What you get
Classical study meets modern tools: grammar, pronunciation, and natural speaking.
Theory slides, matching cards, fill-in-the-blank, dictation, and sentence building.
Read micro-fragments, practice, then produce. Lookups use Apertium with FreeDict as fallback.
Catalog lives on the server; you download a language to the device when you start it.
XP, streaks, and unlocks are tracked per user and per course — the active course lives in session, not the URL.
Web Speech for listen-and-repeat. RL stands for Raven Language: diction, oratory, urban fluency.
Author units, verbs, quizzes, and stories as JSON. Import and export between installations — no backend.
Dark academia
The name pays tribute to the raven in Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven. Edgard is imposing, nocturnal, and observant. He watches every step and corrects with surgical precision.
Built with React, Vite, Tailwind, and SQLite WASM in OPFS — a local library on your device, not a cloud classroom.
From the README
Requires Node 24.19.0 (see .nvmrc), plus localhost or HTTPS for OPFS.
nvm use
npm install
npm run dev
npm run build # production build (generates public/courses/index.json)
npm run preview # serve the build locally
npm run courses:sync # copy src/data → public/courses/
npm run dict:build # rebuild ita–spa dictionary
The dev server sends Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy and Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy so
SharedArrayBuffer / OPFS can persist edgardrl.sqlite3. Deploy on Netlify
with the same headers.
